Managed databases,zero DBA required

PostgreSQL, MySQL and MongoDB, provisioned in Addis Ababa in about a minute. The patching and the daily backups are AletCloud's. What comes back is a host, a port and a set of credentials.

One free database per account, with no expiry date.

Pick an engine and a version.

Three engines, each pinned to the minor version you choose rather than upgraded underneath you. Everything after that choice is the same instance with a different client on the end of it.

Reachable from your apps. Public only if you say so.

Every instance has an internal host from the minute it starts. The address on the open internet is one switch, and it can be off without anything of yours losing the database.

Apps connect on the internal host
An app or a VPS on your account reaches the database over the cluster network, at the host above. That traffic stays inside the data centre in Addis and is not billed as bandwidth.
The public address is a switch
On, and the database answers at an address on the open internet, which is what a client on your laptop or an analytics tool needs. Off, and that address stops existing.
Off is not the same as unreachable
With it off, your hosted apps still connect, and so does any device on your private network. A database with no public address is still a database you can open a client against.
Credentials are issued, not chosen
The user, the password and the connection string come with the instance. Rotate them from the console when a key leaves with somebody, and the old ones stop working.

What being managed actually means.

None of this is a console you have to open. It is the work that would otherwise be somebody's Tuesday, done on the instance from the minute it starts.

Popular engines

PostgreSQL, MySQL and MongoDB. Pick an engine and a version and the instance is built for it, on a minor version that stays where you left it.

Durable storage

Your data lives as three synchronous copies on SSD across four storage hosts in one Addis Ababa data centre, so losing one storage host does not interrupt the database.

Secure connections

Managed credentials and a connection string issued with the instance, rotated from the console whenever you want new ones. TLS on every engine.

Live metrics

CPU, memory and storage read off the running instance in the console, next to the logs, so a database filling up is visible before it is a problem.

Resize on demand

Move the instance to a larger plan as the data grows. The host, the database name and the credentials all survive the move.

Automated backups

Automated daily backups (paid plans, running databases) kept 3, 7, 14 or 30 days as you choose; 7 by default. Restore from any backup from the console, which replaces the current contents of the database, or download it and restore with standard tools. A backup on demand is a button above them.

Solo is free and does not expire
One database per account, a gigabyte of storage and the same engines the paid plans run. Memory is 256Mi on PostgreSQL and 512Mi on MySQL and MongoDB. It has no automated backups, and no backups of any kind.
MongoDB sits differently at the small end
It allows a hundred connections on Solo, Pro and Ultra rather than ten or twenty five.
Retention is set per instance
Automated daily backups (paid plans, running databases) kept 3, 7, 14 or 30 days as you choose; 7 by default. A backup taken by hand sits in the same list.
Changing plan keeps the database
Move up when the data grows. The host, the database name and the credentials come through unchanged, and the instance restarts once to take the new size.

Questions people ask

Short answers to the ones that come up most. For anything else, call 6993 and a person answers.

Ask us something else
Is there a free plan?

Yes. One Solo database per account, free with no expiry date, with a gigabyte of storage and the same engines as the paid plans. It has no automated backups, and no backups of any kind.

Are backups automatic?

On the paid plans, yes. Automated daily backups (paid plans, running databases) kept 3, 7, 14 or 30 days as you choose; 7 by default. Restore from any backup from the console, which replaces the current contents of the database, or download it and restore with standard tools. A backup on demand is a button above them.

Can I connect from outside AletCloud?

Yes. The instance comes with a host, a port and credentials, and a connection string for a laptop, a client such as DBeaver or pgAdmin, or the psql and mysql command line tools. An AletCloud app linked to the database gets the string as an environment variable.
