Managed PostgreSQL in Ethiopia, with a free plan

PostgreSQL run for you on hardware AletCloud owns and operates, inside Ethio Telecom's Bole data centre in Addis Ababa. One Solo database per account is free with no expiry date; the paid plans are priced in Birr and charged by the minute. Every instance comes with a host, a port and credentials that are ready to use.

PostgreSQL 14 through 18, provisioned in about a minute.

What managed means here

AletCloud runs the instance: provisioning, the version it stays on, the credentials, the metrics and the daily backups on the paid plans. You get a connection string and a console that shows what the database is doing.

Provisioned in about a minute

Choose a PostgreSQL major from 14 to 18, a plan and a name. About a minute later the console shows a host, port 5432 and a set of credentials that work, over TLS.

Pinned to the version you chose

The instance is built on a minor release of the major you picked and left on it. Nothing is upgraded underneath a running database.

Backed up daily on the paid plans

Retention is chosen per instance, and a restore or a download is a click in the console. The figures are under Backups and durability, below.

Credentials come with the instance

A user, a password and a connection string are created alongside the database rather than chosen by you. Rotate them from the console and the old ones stop working at once.

Metrics and logs in the console

CPU, memory and disk read from the running instance, with recent database logs beside them, so a disk filling up is visible before the application notices.

Resize on demand

When the data outgrows the plan, pick the next one up. One restart applies the new size, and the host, the database name and the credentials carry on as they were.

The same work is available over MCP, so Claude Code, Cursor or Codex can create and resize databases for you. The managed databases page has the console panels; the guide has the steps.

Create a database
One free database, with no expiry date
Every account gets a Solo database at no charge: a gigabyte of SSD, 256Mi of memory on PostgreSQL, and the same engine the paid plans run. It stays free for as long as you keep it.
The monthly figure is a ceiling
Each paid plan carries a monthly price and the rate per minute is worked out from it, so a month that runs end to end comes to exactly the figure. Delete the instance and the charge stops at that minute.

Every figure AletCloud charges, on one page: the price list. Next to the other providers selling to Ethiopia: cloud providers compared.

Backups and durability

What the platform does with your data, stated the way the service level agreement states it, and nothing it does not do.

Daily backups on the paid plans
Automated daily backups (paid plans, running databases) kept 3, 7, 14 or 30 days as you choose; 7 by default. A database that is stopped or suspended is not backed up while it stays that way, and the backups it already has remain for their retention period.
Restore from the console or by download
Restore from any backup from the console, which replaces the current contents of the database, or download it and restore with standard tools. Each backup is a logical export taken once a day, so the worst case is losing up to 24 hours of changes; there is no point-in-time recovery.
Three copies in one data centre
Each database is held as three synchronous copies on SSD across four storage hosts in one Addis Ababa data centre, so one storage host can fail without interrupting it. The backups live on a separate backup server outside the storage cluster that holds your live database, as a single copy.
Solo has no backups
The free plan has no automated backups, and no backups of any kind. Keep your own application-level backups of anything on Solo you would miss, or move it to a paid plan.

Three ways in, and the public one is optional

An app on your account, a device on your WireGuard network and a laptop on the open internet reach the database by different routes. Only the last needs the public switch, which stays off until you turn it on.

From an app on AletCloud

Link the database to one of your apps and the connection string arrives as an environment variable, DATABASE_URL, with nothing to copy. The app talks to the internal host inside the data centre, and that traffic is not counted as bandwidth.

From a laptop or a desktop client

A new instance has no public address. Switch public access on and the database answers on the open internet to psql, DBeaver or pgAdmin; switch it off and the address is gone, while everything inside AletCloud keeps connecting.

Over your WireGuard network

Every account comes with a WireGuard network at no charge. Add the laptop or the office machine you work from and it reaches the database through the tunnel, so the public switch can stay off.

More on both: private networking and app hosting.

Start with the free Solo database

From nothing to a running database takes a couple of minutes and no conversation with anybody. Everything is self-service.

  1. 01

Create an account with a phone number or with Google, and verify the number with the code that arrives by SMS.

  2. 02

In the console, create a database: PostgreSQL, a version, a name, and Solo, the free plan.

  3. 03

Copy the connection string from the console, or attach the database to an app on AletCloud and it is already there.

  4. 04

When the data outgrows Solo, top up the wallet through Chapa with telebirr, a bank transfer or a card, and move to a paid plan.

Ask us something else
Is there a free PostgreSQL database in Ethiopia?

Yes. Each AletCloud account can run one PostgreSQL database on Solo at no charge, and the plan has no end date: a gigabyte of SSD and 256Mi of memory, on the same engine the paid plans run. It has no automated backups, and no backups of any kind, so keep a copy of anything on it you would miss.

Which PostgreSQL versions can I run?

PostgreSQL 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18. You pick the major; the instance is built on a minor release of it and left there, so nothing is upgraded underneath a running database. The same console runs MySQL 5.7 and 8.0 and MongoDB 5.0 through 7.0.

Are backups included?

On the paid plans. Automated daily backups (paid plans, running databases) kept 3, 7, 14 or 30 days as you choose; 7 by default. You can also take one yourself before a risky change, and it is listed with the automated ones. Restore from any backup from the console, which replaces the current contents of the database, or download it and restore with standard tools.

Can I connect from my laptop?

Yes, once public access is switched on for the instance; it is off when the database is created. The console shows the host, the port and the credentials, and a connection string that psql, DBeaver or pgAdmin take as it is. With the switch off, apps on AletCloud and devices on your WireGuard network still connect.

Can I upgrade the plan later?

Yes. Pick a larger plan from the console and the instance restarts once with the new memory and disk; the host, the database name and the credentials are the same afterwards. Billing moves to the new plan's rate from that minute.

Where is the data stored?

In Addis Ababa, on servers AletCloud owns and runs inside Ethio Telecom's Bole data centre. Each database is written as three synchronous copies on SSD across four storage hosts in one Addis Ababa data centre, and its backups go to a separate backup server outside the storage cluster that holds your live database. The data does not leave Ethiopia.

How is a managed database billed?

Per minute of running, at a rate worked out from the plan's monthly price and taken from the prepaid wallet in Birr. A full month comes to the monthly figure and no more, and deleting the instance ends the charge at that minute. The prices on this page are before VAT; 15% is added when the wallet is topped up through Chapa, by telebirr, bank transfer or card, and the invoice shows it.

What happens if my wallet runs out?

Your databases are suspended, not deleted; data is kept while suspended. AletCloud notifies you as the balance runs low, and a top-up brings them back where they were. Deleting a database yourself removes it and its backups.
