Cloud VPS in Ethiopia, billed by the minute in Birr

Linux virtual servers on hardware AletCloud owns and operates in Addis Ababa. Pick a size and a distribution and the machine is up in about ninety seconds, with full root access, paid by the minute from a prepaid wallet in ETB.

From 2,400 ETB a month before VAT. Top up with telebirr, a bank transfer or a card through Chapa.

Why a server inside Ethiopia matters

Four things change when the machine is a drive across town and the provider is paid in Birr. Ethiopia's providers, and where each one hosts, are side by side on the comparison page.

The round trip is a few milliseconds

The data centre is in Addis Ababa, so a request from an office here crosses town and back rather than going to Frankfurt or North Virginia. Typical round trip, in milliseconds.

Paid in Birr, with telebirr

Every figure is in ETB. Top up the wallet through Chapa with telebirr, a bank transfer or a card; usage is taken from the balance by the minute. 15% VAT is added on the top-up.

The data stays in the country

The hardware is AletCloud's own, operated by AletCloud, inside Ethio Telecom's Bole data centre. Your data stays in Ethiopian jurisdiction, the same jurisdiction as your customers' records.

No foreign card, no forex approval

Running software from Ethiopia used to mean a server in Frankfurt, an invoice in dollars and a forex approval before either. Nothing here is paid in foreign currency, and signing up is a phone number and one SMS.

The sizes, and what each costs in Birr

Six sizes, from one vCPU to sixteen. The monthly figure is a ceiling: underneath it AletCloud counts hourly and charges by the minute, so a server that ran for an afternoon costs an afternoon. Figures in ETB before VAT.

A public IPv4 address costs 300 ETB a month
Optional, and at most one per server. Without one the machine answers only on the account's WireGuard network, so there is one less door open to the internet.
Extra SSD is 100 ETB per GB a month
Add up to 500 GB to any size. The disk survives a resize.
Stop it and it stops costing
Stop or delete the server and the charge stops at that minute. There are no long-term contracts. When your balance is exhausted your services are suspended, not deleted; data is kept while suspended. Top up and they resume where they were.

What comes with every size

Every size carries the same access, console, networking and backups. What changes is the resources, and the free SMSEthiopia package that comes with the larger sizes.

Full root access

The login is root, with full sudo, from the first minute. Install packages, change kernel parameters or rebuild the whole image whenever the work needs it.

SSH, or a console in the browser

Connect over SSH with the key or password set at creation, or open the web console: no SSH key, no tunnel, and the way in when a firewall rule locks you out.

Snapshots and automated backups

Snapshot the machine whenever you like and roll it back to that point later. Automated backups run at the hour you pick and are kept for as many days as you set.

Private networking, free with the account

One WireGuard network per account. Reach every server by its private address from the devices you add, with nothing on the public internet unless you attach a public IP.

Resize it any minute

Pick a larger or smaller size whenever the load changes. The server reboots once with the new resources, keeps its disk and its address, and is charged at the new rate from that minute.

Live metrics, nothing to install

CPU, memory, disk, traffic in and out and uptime are drawn in the console for every server, with no agent to install inside the machine.

    Create an account

Sign up with a phone number or with Google and verify it with the one-time code that arrives by SMS. No card on file, no call before the first resource.

  2. 02

    Top up the wallet

Top up in ETB through Chapa with telebirr, a bank transfer or a card. Creating a server checks the balance for a day of it first: for a Pro, 150 ETB. A check, not a charge.

  3. 03

Pick a size and an image

One of six sizes and one of seven distributions: Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, CentOS Stream, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux and openSUSE. Add an SSH public key or set a password; attach a public IPv4 address or extra SSD if the workload needs them.

  4. 04

    Connect

The machine is up in about ninety seconds. Connect over SSH or open the web console from the dashboard. Stop, resize, rebuild or delete it from the same place; the charge follows the change.

Who runs a VPS in Ethiopia

Ethiopian businesses

A shop and its database on one machine, close to the customers who use it and in the same jurisdiction as their records. Pro, at 2 vCPU and 4 GB, is the size to start on.

Developers

A staging box, a bot or a cron job on the smallest size, switched off when it is not needed and costing nothing while it is off, from the console or from an MCP client.

Agencies hosting client sites

One server per client, grouped into projects in the console and reached over the account's WireGuard network, with a public IP only where a site needs one. For a larger estate, write to sales@aletcloud.com.

Questions about VPS hosting in Ethiopia

Short answers, with the figures from the table above. For anything else, call 6993 or write to support@aletcloud.com.

Ask us something else
Is there a VPS provider with servers in Ethiopia?

Yes. AletCloud runs its Cloud VPS on hardware it owns and operates inside Ethio Telecom's Bole data centre in Addis Ababa. The data never leaves the country, and a request from an office in Addis is a few milliseconds away rather than a hop to Europe. The compare page lists who else has servers in the country.

How much does a VPS cost in Birr?

Six sizes, from the Nano at 2,400 ETB a month, which is 3.29 ETB an hour, to the Ras at 32,000 ETB a month, all before VAT. The monthly figure is a ceiling: the server is charged by the minute, and a month spent running reaches it and stops there.

Can I pay with telebirr?

Yes. Top up the wallet through Chapa and pay with telebirr, a bank transfer or a card; the balance is there as soon as the payment clears, and a server can be created straight away. 15% VAT is added on the top-up.

Do I need a foreign credit card?

No. Every figure is in ETB and paid from a prepaid wallet in Birr, so nothing is paid in foreign currency and there is no forex approval to get first. Signing up is a phone number and one SMS, with no card on file.

Where exactly are the servers?

In Ethio Telecom's Bole data centre in Addis Ababa, region et-addis-1, on hardware AletCloud owns and operates. A server, an app, a database and a bucket on the same account never leave the building when they talk to each other.

Can I get a public IP address?

Yes. A public IPv4 address is optional, one per server, at 300 ETB a month. Skip it and the server is reachable only over the account's free WireGuard network, which is one door fewer on the internet.

Is there a free trial for VPS?

No. Servers are paid from the start; the free tier is one Solo app and one Solo database per account, free for life. A server is charged by the minute, so an hour of the Nano costs 3.29 ETB and stopping it stops the charge.

Which Linux distributions can I install?

Seven: Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, CentOS Stream, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux and openSUSE, as server images, and several of them again as desktop images with a graphical environment and a VNC console in the browser.
